The foot at this stage is mostly made of a soft pliable material known as cartilage; no bones have formed yet. As your baby grows, the cartilage will harden to become more and more solid. The arching has not started forming yet.
6 months – 9 months:
Your baby starts to stand upright at this stage. The cartilage structure in their feet will start to harden into a bone or a bony tissue. The shape of a fully-grown foot will gradually start to form. At this stage, there will be some gaps between the newly formed bones, so you still have to be careful as the foot can still be easily bent out of shape.
9 – 18 months:
Your child’s foot will have 25 bones forming at this stage; however, there will be still some gaps between them. These bones should be allowed to grow naturally to avoid misalignment. The navicular bone, which is located just below the ankle, is not yet formed.
2 – 4 years old:
The navicular bone at this stage will start to solidify and the fatty tissue around the bones will start to disappear. You will also notice that the foot has started to take on a more adult shape. Watch out for flat feet or frequent tripping at this stage and work with your podiatrist if any abnormalities show up.
4 years and beyond:
The arch of the foot should be more visible and functional at this stage, and the fatty tissues around bones should have significantly reduced by now. The growth rate of their feet begins to reduce. Choose shoe designs with durable materials that will support their feet and withstand active play.
It’s important to have your child’s feet assessed by a podiatrist at this stage in order to point out any abnormalities that might need early intervention. This can also guide you in the type of shoes to buy for your child.
